Free tickets for the Language Show...

Atlas is happy to be exhibiting at this year’s Language Show, from 30th October until the 1st November at Olympia, London. The Language Show is the UK’s biggest event for language learners, teachers, linguists and anyone with a love for languages. The show offers language enthusiasts all the help, advice and resources needed to learn or teach languages all under one roof. There will be over 100 free seminars and 185 exhibitors covering every aspect of language teaching and learning in a fun and entertaining way.  Plus you will have the opportunity to meet the Atlas Team! And if you're interested in learning something new, we have a range of courses to offer at a discounted rate, if you book on the day. Contact us if you'd like some free tickets, and make a note to visit us at Stand 276 when you're there.

New 24 hr telephone interpreting service

Atlas has recently introduced a new telephone interpreting service. Originally used mostly by medical GPs and hospital consultants, telephone interpreting is now a fundamental service for many public and private sector professionals and 2- or 3-way conference calls can normally be set up in less than a minute. If you are a first-time user, just call us on 020 7240 6666 to create an account – this only takes a few minutes and we have no set up charges or subscription fees.

Atlas acquires Line One Translations

Atlas is happy to announce that it has acquired Line One Translations. This established company had been run by Rosalind Cooke, a respected translator. We wish Ros all the best with her family during her retirement, and she can rest assured that we will continue to provide our usual top notch service to all her clients; we also look forward to working with some new translators.

The UK's deadliest biscuit

Although this story has little to do with languages or translation, I thought it would be someting to make you laugh as summer draws to an end. A recent study has calculated the biscuit most likely to cause someone an injury during a tea or coffee break on the basis of something called the "Biscuit Injury Threat Evaluation". According to the Daily Telegraph, the research was carried out by Mindlab International who tested the physical properties of 15 popular types of biscuits. Accidents included people poking themselves in the eye with a biscuit, falling off a chair while reaching for the tin, sustaining burns after dunking a biscuit in scalding tea, and being hit by fragments flying through the air. Other people have reported choking on crumbs and damaging a tooth or filling on a particularly hard biscuit. One unlucky person ended up stuck in wet concrete after wading in to pick up a stray biscuit.

Question of the month! Test yourself with our September question:

What is the UK's deadliest biscuit? a) Ginger nut   b) Shortbread c) Bourbon d) Custard cream  e) Jaffa cake (answer can be found at the bottom of the newsletter).

 Mad about huskies!

Atlas, always keen to hear from previous colleagues, recently learnt that Stephanie, who worked for the company back in the 90's, first as a work placement and then as a Project Manager, has been working as a Husky handler in North Sweden. At first she worked as a dog handler during the winter of 2008 and then she was supposed to work as a tour guide for a Norwegian company but soon realised that the job was not for her after she was given no training and had to guess information and improvise on the spot during her first tour. She called some friends in Sweden and decided to head back up north to Kiruna where she had been working before. There she acquired an Alaskan Husky puppy from a friend, who she called "Indi", after Indiana Jones.  She will now work as a dog handler and train the huskies before starting the new winter season as a full-time sled dog guide until the end of April. If you’re interested in following Stephanie’s adventure you can find her blog at:

Other news

Atlas wishes Julia and Elisabetta farewell and Good Luck! as they head back home to Germany and Italy to finish their studies. They will be sadly missed. In their place, Atlas welcomes new work placement Marta Ramiro. Marta is from Madrid in Spain and was first attracted to languages because they were a requirement for her studies in tourism. On arriving in the UK she decided to study Translation and become a professional translator and interpreter in the legal field. Therefore, at moment she is studying a BA in Translation & TEFL at the University of Middlesex.

Answer to September question:
C) Custard cream.
